24 'THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER April 25, 1979 Carolina Watch General Affirms Drill Sergeant's Court-Martial Maj. Gen. John Blount, commander of Fort Jackson, has upheld the Dec. 4 conmar viction of S. Sgt.

Lawrence Chapman Jr. Chapman, 34, of Easley, was convicted in the death of Pvt. Wayne Krassow, 18, of Cygnet, Ohio, who died of heatstroke last June. Chapman was reduced one rank and fined $500. Sgt.

Willie Alexander, 24, of Timmonsville, who was also convicted in the death, is serving a six-month jail term. The sergeants were acquitted in the death Lester Watts, 18, of York, S.C., who also died last June. Warehouse Burns Fire destroyed the C.B. Allen cotton warehouse in Greenville about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, authorities said.

Fire fighters fought the blaze for 40 before controlling the fire about, minutes, was unknown. No injuries were reported. Several witnesses said they saw two teenagers running from the unoccupied building, which was valued at $600.000 to $700,000, before the fire broke out. $2 Million For UNC UNC has received $2 million from the William Jr. Charitable Trust of for RewKenan, Carolina Challenge, an effort to increase the university's unrestricted endowment.

Duke, disputing with the county over tax assessments, will pay taxes on 75 percent of the assessed value of its property in the county for 1978.

The settlement was reached Monday. Earlier this year, Duke worked out a settlement with Lincoln County officials over taxes on Duke property in that county. Marine Killed, 3 Missing A member of the 32nd Marine Amphibious Unit at Camp Lejeune was killed and three members of the unit are missing after two vessels collided Monday during a nighttime rescue for a third Marine vessel that had sunk off the coast of Italy, a Marine spokesman said Tuesday. Two of the missing men were identified as Navy Hospitalman Harry Russom 19, of Jacksonville, N.C., Marine Pfc. Louis Scott.

20, of Chesilhurst, N.J., and Marine Lance Ronald Lott, 21, Little Rock, and Tulsa, Okla. The name of the dead man was withheld until relatives are notified. In Charlotte Smith Distinguished Alumnus: N.C. Appeals Court Judge Richard Erwin, a 1947 Johnson C. Smith University graduate, is Smith's Distinguished Alumnus for 1979. Erwin, a Marion native who majored in economics and earned a law degree from Howard University in Washington in 1951, was the first black in North Carolina elected to statewide office when he was chosen appeals judge last year. Erwin will be honored at a convocation at 10 a.m.

Mr. Spurrier was born May 17, 1899 in Mecklenburg County, He was the son of the late H. W. and Susie McGee Spurrier. He was co-founder, president and treasurer of Spurrier Oil Company, was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church and was presently serving on the Administrative Board and Finance Committee.

For many years, he served on the Official Board and was former chairman. Mr. Spurrier served many years on the City-County Zoning and Adjustment Board and was a former member of the Charlotte Civitan Club. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. John Gaffney of Gaffney, S.C.

and Mrs. Richard A. Wiegmann of Richmond, Virginia; five grandsons and one granddaughter; three sisters, Miss Lois Spurrier, Miss Madge Spurrier and Mrs. Herbert Moore, all of Charlotte: one brother, William M. Spurrier of Charlotte.
