During fiscal 1982 (July 1, 1981, to June 30, 1982) the 16- person unit more than doubled the fiscal 1981 arrest figures. And, police say, that has made some dents in their war against prostitution and drugs. "We've very pleased with the way they're going," Assistant Police Chief R.C. Eidson said Thursday. "They've been rolling along and doing a good job on some areas that have been problems." Vice and narcotics officers made 843 overall arrests in 1982, a increase over fiscal 1981's 414 arrests.

"It's the increase in manpower," vice and narcotics Capt. Larry Snider said. "Chief (Mack) Vines and Cmdr. (Jack) Bowman consider the enforcement of vicerelated laws as an important part of law enforcement here. "From city manager, the mayor, to the chain of command of the police department, they've given us what we've asked for manpower, equipment, money and the resources we need to enforce the law," Snider said.

Vines increased the number of vice and narcotics officers from eight to 16 as part of his reorganization plan in April 1981.
