Pierre’s not perfect, but …

Pierre Poilievre is likely to be Canada’s next prime minister, with a majority government, after the next election. Is he a so-called perfect politician? Absolutely not. I do not believe that Pierre and the Conservatives are going to create a Canadian utopia where every decision is right for Canada and without unintended consequences. Every politician, regardless of party, is, after all, a human being with all of the potential failings that come with being human. In Pierre’s case, I take comfort knowing that he comes not from a privileged, entitled background, but one that is far more in tune with what the government is doing and how it affects the average Canadian.

Eldon Beix

There’s at least hope he’ll do better than the current PM.

Polls mean nothing right now

Re Poilievre pulls ahead; Tories lead Liberals in Quebec: Poll, May 30: Although a good sign for the Poilievre’s Conservatives, thanks to Jagmeet Singh there will no federal election until late in 2025, making polls at this early stage meaningless. Let’s never forget when it comes to “vote buying”, Trudeau is in a master class of his own. The last three elections Trudeau poured tons of money into his must-win regions — Quebec, Ontario and Atlantic Canada. Voters there responded, proving they can easily be bought off with their own tax dollars. Trudeau having the power of the purse, with his back to the wall according to polls, we will see the biggest vote-buying spree in Canadian history in Trudeau’s all-out effort to cling to power.

Larry Comeau

Even his traditional support bases are beginning to see through the facade.

Maybe an employment contract

Political parties need to be held to account on the promises they make to get elected. When we elected the Liberals to go green, did we think that meant a punitive carbon tax to manipulate us into poverty so we can’t drive as much? Force the country to stop selling fossil fuels and destroy Canada’s income? Maybe we need an employment contract between constituents and their representatives with a recall option. We need to stop the abuse of political power we once trusted.

Al Hutchison

Accountability in politics is a bit of a unicorn these days.
