Ruth Elizabeth Pursley Memorial services for Ruth Elizabeth (Wheeley) Pursley, 81, are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2002, at Jackson's BurksWalker-Tippit Funeral Home with Rev. Karen Morris officiating.

Mrs. Pursley died peacefully, with a family member at her side, Tuesday afternoon, May 21, 2002. She had been in a local nursing home 2 years during a lengthy illness. She was born in Tyler on Jan. 10, 1921, to the late James Andrew Wheeley Sr.

and his wife, Jessie Eola (Barnes) Wheeley. Ruth attended Tyler public schools and graduated from Tyler High School in 1939. In 1942, Troy Ivan Pursley, a farmer from Indiana, came to Tyler to visit relatives and met Ruth. He came back a few months later to marry her and took her back with him to Farmland, Ind. As a hardworking farmer's wife, she served a hot lunch for 15 to 20 farm "hands" daily for several years.

They lived in several cities in Indiana after Mr. Pursley retired from farming. During this time, Ruth worked in a hospital as a housekeeping supervisor. In 1977, they moved to Tyler, much to their family's delight. She then worked at Mother I Frances Hospital as Housekeeping Supervisor (1978-1984) until she retired.

After this, she worked as a "Granny" at Grandy's on South Beckham Avenue (part time, 1984- 1996); and as a school crossing guard for the city of Tyler public schools (1991-2000). This crossing guard job was her joy, because she loved children, and she gave unconditional love and candy "suckers" every day to every child. She loved baking brownies to give to people everywhere she went every serviceman, garbage pickup man, bank teller, clerk in a store, doctor, receptionist, postman, etc. Ruth was an "adopted" grandmother for many children at Cedar Street United Methodist Church, where she was a member since she was about 10 (except for the years in Indiana). She also volunteered several years at the Senior Citizens Center, until January 2000, at which time she moved to Clairmont Nursing Home.

Ruth was preceded in death by her twin brother, Robert E. Wheeley; brother, James Andrew Wheeley sisters, Grace Hunter, Frances Griffin, Mattie Riley; and her husband of 54 years, Troy Pursley. Ruth is survived by her sister, Bessie Mae Dozier, Tyler; brother, Joseph E. Wheeley and wife Sara, White Deer; sis Marie Wheeley and Mary Etta Wheeley; several nieces and nephews, and many friends. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry co*ker, Hugh Stanaland, O.J.

Willis, Raymond Earl Towns, Joe Hubert Wheeley, Bobby Wheeley, Roger Plante, Dan Milligan, James Boucher, Vic Graff, Larry Flowers, Duncan Gray and Johnny Kosorak. The family wishes to thank Dr. Arielle Lee for her special care and concern for Ruth. And we will be forever grateful to the wonderful caregivers at the Clairmont Nursing Home for their compassion and attention to her every need. She herself was thankful for all this care.

Now that Ruth has gone home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the family gathered with friends to remember her and celebrate her life at Jackson's Burks-Walker-Tippit on Thursday evening, May 23, 2002, from p.m. If desired, memorials may be made to the Cedar Street United Methodist Church, 1420 N. Church Tyler, 75702; or a favorite charity. Obituaries Online: tylerpaper.com East Texas Funerals Rites For Rev. Preston Edwards Scheduled Saturday In Marshall LONGVIEW Services for the Rev.
