Tipping in hotels in Montreal

If you're staying in a hotel in Montreal it's standard practise to tip between 10-20%.

Taxis are readily available throughout the city, and Uber also operates in Montréal. Thanks to Montréal's public transportation system, there really is no need for a car. Parking is relatively cheap, but you might have difficulty finding a spot in the more touristy neighborhoods.

Based on my own time in Montreal, and what I know travellers are usually looking for when visiting, I recommend 3 days as the ideal amount of time to spend in Montreal. But, if you don't have this many days to spend, don't worry, as 2 days in Montreal is enough time to experience the best of the city.

After a short 15-minute walk from Beaver Lake, the entirety of Montreal's downtown is revealed from the top of Mont Royal. During the day or at nighttime, this is one of the city's most unforgettable views.

Giving your Montreal cab driver a tip is indeed the norm. Most travellers leave a 10 to 15% tip, however, if your driver went above and beyond, you can always leave more.

“You're not required to do so, but if you do leave a note, just grab the hotel stationery and write some sort of pleasantry and leave the tip on top of that,” Swann said. “And don't just throw a wad of bills on the desk. Open them up and lay them flat, so it clearly is a tip that is meant for the hotel staff.”

Tip in the local currency

Whenever you tip during your trip to Canada it is important to use the local currency, that is - Canadian dollars. Otherwise you'll leave your service providers with cash they can't use without paying high fees on currency exchange.

Downtown Montreal

Montreal's downtown core is going through a boom, and is where you'll feel like you're in North America the most. Metal and glass skyscrapers share space with wide tree-lined boulevards and busy plazas. It's the business core of the city and if you like shopping, this is where you'll want to be.

Quebec City is more thoroughly French. It's smaller, more historic, and has more quaint vibes. It's a great holiday destination, and their winter festivals can be quite enjoyable. Overall, it's likely going to be a more distinctive and memorable place to visit than Montreal.

Montreal West (Montréal-Ouest)

This primarily residential suburb to the southwest of the city centre has an unusually high concentration of anglophones. Of the 5,000 residents, about two-thirds speak English as their first language, and three-quarters speak English at home.

There's no debate - Old Quebec is the best place to stay for first-time visitors. Two neighborhoods make up this popular tourist spot: Upper Town and Lower Town, connected by funicular or the famous Breakneck Steps.
