Nineteen Republican state attorneys general have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to get involved in a dispute over climate-change lawsuits

  • By DAVID A. LIEB - Associated Press

Republican attorneys general in 19 states have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to block several Democratic-led states from pursuing climate change lawsuits against the oil and gas industry in their own state courts.

The unusual request comes as dozens of states and local governments have filed lawsuits alleging that fossil fuel companies deceived the public about the risks of their products contributing to climate change. The lawsuits claim billions of dollars of damage from such things as severe storms, wildfires and rising sea levels.

Manchester United's Casemiro and Hojlund left out of team for FA Cup final against Man City

  • By JAMES ROBSON - AP Soccer Writer

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has left Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund out of his starting lineup for the FA Cup final against Manchester City. Both players have been named on the bench. Marcus Rashford starts in attack at Wembley and on-loan Sofyan Amrabat is also playing. Casemiro has endured a difficult campaign in his second season at United and was heavily criticized for his recent performance in United’s 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace. City manager Pep Guardiola named Jack Grealish and Ruben Dias on the bench as he looks to complete back-to-back Premier League and FA Cup doubles.

A mob in Pakistan burns down a house and beats a Christian over alleged desecration of Quran

  • By BABAR DOGAR - Associated Press

Police say hundreds of Muslims in eastern Pakistan went on a rampage over allegations that a Christian man had desecrated the pages of Islam’s holy book, ransacking and burning his house and beating him before police officers rescued the man and his father. Police say the incident occurred Saturday in the Mujahid Colony residential area in Sargodha, a city in Punjab province. The incident brought back memories of one of the worst attacks on Christians in Pakistan in August 2023, when angry mobs burned churches and attacked dozens in Jaranwala, a district in Punjab province. Blasphemy accusations are common in Pakistan.

What's open and closed on Memorial Day

  • By The Associated Press

In what had long been celebrated every May 30 to honor America’s fallen soldiers, Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday in 1971, observed on the last Monday in May. Businesses increasingly have chosen to stay open on the holiday, leading to what is now one of the biggest retail sales and travel weekends of the year. Government offices, post offices and schools are closed, as is the stock market, banks and a handful of businesses. The vast majority of retailers will be open, with many trying to lure customers with big promotional sales. Hours may vary by location.

Rafael Nadal says this might not be his last French Open

  • By HOWARD FENDRICH - AP Tennis Writer

This might not turn out to be Rafael Nadal’s last French Open, after all. The 14-time champion at Roland Garros said Saturday that he is not 100% sure that he will not play again at the Grand Slam tournament. Nadal has missed much of the last two seasons because of hip and abdominal muscle issues, and he is just 7-4 in 2024. There had been some doubt after a lopsided loss at the Italian Open two weeks ago whether he would even enter the clay-court event in Paris at all this year. But he did show up, and has been practicing this week. Nadal was drawn to face No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev in a showdown that will be everyone’s focus on Monday, Day 2 of the tournament.

What to look for in mosquito repellents

  • By MIKE STOBBE - AP Medical Writer

Mosquito season is starting to rev up across much of the United States. So you might want to pause summer vacation planning and consider what to look for in insect repellents. U.S. officials say to look only at EPA-registered repellents. But those are only one line of defense. You should also wear long sleeves and long pants. And avoid going out at dusk and dawn, when some types of mosquito tend to be most active. Also, try to remove standing water from around your home if you can, because mosquitoes need to breed in water.

Car bomb in the Syrian capital kills one. Drone strike near Lebanon border targets two vehicles

  • AP

Syria's state media says a bomb attached to a car exploded in the western part of the Syrian capital that is home to several diplomatic missions, killing one person and causing material damage. Damascus’ Mazze neighborhood houses the Iranian consulate, destroyed last month in a strike blamed on Israel. State news agency, SANA, didn’t say on Saturday who the person killed. The opposition war monitor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the man killed in the explosion carried a card identifying him as a Syrian army officer. Hours after the blast in Damascus, an Israeli drone strike reportedly targeted a car and a truck outside the western Syrian town of Qusair, close to Lebanon's border.

Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki in March declared the area disturbed and banned mining activities after clashes over a mining dispute led to the deaths of seven people. Residents told media outlets that mining had continued despite the ban and blamed authorities for allowing it.

Zelenskyy says Ukraine has taken back control in areas of the embattled Kharkiv region

  • By SAMYA KULLAB and ELISE MORTON - Associated Press

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukrainian forces have secured “combat control” of areas where Russian troops entered Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region earlier this month. Zelenskyy’s comments on Friday evening appeared to be at odds with those made by Russian officials. Viktor Vodolatskiy, a member of Russia‘s lower house of parliament, said Russian forces now controlled more than half of the town of Vovchansk, three miles (five kilometers) inside the border, Russian state news agency Tass reported Friday. Russia’s Kharkiv push appears to be a coordinated new offensive that includes testing Ukrainian defenses in the Donetsk region further south, while also launching incursions in the northern Sumy and Chernihiv regions.

Drivers who try the Indy 500-NASCAR 600 double have had mixed results. Kyle Larson is next

  • By MICHAEL MAROT - AP Sports Writer

Only four drivers have attempted the Memorial Day weekend double — completing 1,100-miles of racing in a single day. Kyle Larson will try to become the fifth Sunday. Bad weather, mechanical problems and late arrivals have derailed some of the previous quests, leading to mixed results. Larson has a chance to rewrite history even with rain in the Indianapolis 500 forecast when he starts, fittingly, from the No. 5 spot before heading to Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600 and his more familiar No. 5 Chevrolet. But if anyone can succeed, it's Larson, the 2021 Cup champion who is one of the world’s top and most versatile racers.

She says she is rooting for Alexander Rossi to win and hoping that her dad finishes second if he doesn't wreck.

Raisi died alongside the country’s foreign minister and six others in a crash in the country’s mountainous northwest on Sunday. London is home to a large Iranian community, most of whom left in the years since the country’s Islamic revolution in 1979.
