Bay Area Storytellers of Color (BASC) is one of our favorite communities! Created by comms pros Kim Bardakian Demirjian and Marquise McCoy, and journalist Salvador Rodriguez, the group is meant to provide a safe space for BIPOC comms professionals and journalists to talk about opportunities, share advice, and generally network. We recently co-hosted a BASC event with our sister agency Outcast and had KQED editor Jared Servantez discuss his career path and how the ongoing changes and challenges in the media industry are impacting journalists of color specifically. It was a lively discussion and it was great to see new connections being made.If you’re in the Bay Area and interested in attending a BASC event in the future, feel free to send us a DM and we’ll get you added to the mailing list.

It’s been an incredible year for Archetype Ascend and we want to take a moment to express our gratitude to those who have been a part of this journey so far. Since our launch, we’ve learned a lot, stretched beyond our comfort zones, exceeded most of the goals we set for ourselves, made new relationships, laughed, cried, strongly disagreed, and found solutions – all in service of the founders, executives, and VCs who have been overlooked for far too long in this industry. It truly is amazing how much impact you can make when it is for the community and with the community. Over the past year, we've partnered with and supported early-stage companies like Alix, established global brands like DocuSign, DEI consultancies like ModelExpand, and BIPOC and LGBTQ+ creators through our work with TikTok. We've also leveraged diverse ways to engage with clients, including through traditional and social media strategy and execution, personal branding projects, messaging and positioning workshops, a new office hours offering to provide affordable consultancy for solopreneurs and side hustlers, internal communications and employee focus group facilitation, creative work with our uber talented head of design Albert Lewis, Jr. and his incredible team, and more.In the process, we’ve learned how to get even scrappier: When you’re self-funded or one of the organizations getting a share of the less than 1 percent of funding for Black founders, every single dollar counts. Ascend has been intentional with pricing, creative with how clients are served, and thoughtful with the approach to supporting businesses at every stage of success. The fact is that we, too, have become founders and, in turn, have more empathy, and more readiness to help fellow business leaders. Working within the global Archetype system has been invaluable as we have the necessary resources to scale and provide a wide, effective range of services and a broad, influential network for our clients. It also has shown us the true meaning of allyship. Our CEO, Helena Maus, a mentor to us both for many years, along with the entire management team at the agency has been instrumental in understanding our mission, honoring our perspective and leadership, and providing the necessary support to move the needle. It warms our heart and fortifies our determination to do this work when people from Archetype offices around the globe reach out to us and ask how they can help or ways we can collaborate. Looking forward, we’re excited to keep scaling our reach, partnering with more mission-aligned organizations, and creating a positive impact for as many BIPOC businesses and leaders as we can. Now that the foundation is built, you’ll definitely see us outside more, sharing our knowledge and building with more of you! The best way to secure the future is to create it. Here’s to many more years of building the beautiful, inclusive world we deserve and co-creating it with you.
